Restoring Spring to iPhone Springboard
Instead of copying the highly-flexible Mac Desktop, Springboard inadvertently ended up copying the Windows 95 Desktop, with icons auto-positioning themselves ever-upward, ever-leftward.

User-controlled icon positioning would be gold. Pure gold.
As for the rest of Tog’s ideas—vertical scroll, labels with a random-access dropdown, and containers?—I think Springboard Exposé (or any sort of proto-ZUI, like Flower Garden’s flowerpot array) would be a far more elegant solution.
